Walking through Kruislieveheers
Everbeek-Beneden: a remote, charming village that’s a stone’s throw from the language border. An oasis of silence, peace and unspoilt nature. A landscape stretches out before you in which the Kruislieveheer walking route meanders along lush countryside, woods and forests.
Don’t be alarmed by the wind that can blow bleakly across the plains here. Together with the sound of rustling leaves, screeching birds and the occasional raindrop in a puddle, this is about the only thing you'll hear here. This place is unique, and the hike enables you to take it all in – for 13 km.

Forests to keep you company
The forests in this southern corner of the Flemish Ardennes are remnants of Poodsberg Forest, which once stretched as far as Ronse. What remains today is a beautiful walking area where silence rules.
Steenberg Forest, for example, dates back to the Middle Ages. The combination of picturesque valleys and meadows is a delight to the eye. In summer, cattle graze on the tender grass; they help with the conservation of this area.

A patchwork of sights
Sometimes, great beauty is contained in something small. There are no temples, large churches or ambitious museums in this region. Scattered across the landscape, you’ll find idyllic little chapels and weather-beaten crosses in various materials and sizes. They’re often erected by or under a tree – but not always.
If you venture a climb (between kilometre markers 86 and 87), you’ll discover a beautiful field cross between two large lime trees. It was installed on a coulter. Feel free to sit down and experience the splendour of the view from here.

Everbeek-Beneden: admire and visit
If you continue walking along the banks of the Terkleppebeek, you’ll arrive in the centre of Everbeek-Beneden. Do not confuse this village with Everbeek-Boven, which lies more in the direction of Brakel.
In the village, you can visit d’Harveng Castle, a walled notary’s residence from around 1900. And the Tiep-Tap trail leads you to a little park that appears to be private property at first sight. Don’t worry, it isn’t. Feel free to wander around this old servitude.
After taking a breather, regain your strength
Is it time for a vol-au-vent, a steaming cup of soup or a piece of cake? Try ‘t Fameus Verleden, a cosy brasserie in Everbeek-Beneden. This pub has been beautifully refurbished - just look at that painted ceiling! - and serves delicious, simple and fresh cuisine. The beer list is also great; try sampling the local brews!
Finish your walk with a drink in Het Meiklokje. This pub was once run by the local sexton. The new owners will welcome you to their café with a smile.
Would you also like to book an overnight stay so you can postpone your departure from the Flemish Ardennes a little longer? In De Kleppe holiday home in Brakel, you'll sleep in a former monastery. It’s the ideal location for a stay with family or friends. People in need of care can also enjoy a carefree holiday here.
